I have read five books over the past two weeks which is very unlike me. Obviously I enjoy reading but usually I’m able to complete a novel just under two weeks. Rather than picking up my phone to procrastinate I’ve been reaching for my Kobo where I borrow e-books from the library.
Here’s what I’ve read:
(Un)arranged Marriage by Bali Rai
The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi
The Secret Keeper of Jaipur by Alka Joshi
Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
My favourite of the five has to be Daisy Jones and The Six. Set in the mid-sixties to eighties, TJR takes us on a journey of an upcoming rock n roll band, Daisy Jones and The Six and all their troubles that eventually caused them to split.
Their story is told through a set of interviews with each band member 40 years after their fame. I’ve never read a book laid out this way, but I think it helped the characters to feel real — this is something I love about other TJR books.
TJR is a master of characterisation. The raw interviews highlighted none of the band members were perfect but each of them were able to acknowledge their flaws. There must have been interviews with over 11 people, including the band’s friends, family and management team, but every single personality shone off the page.
Interestingly, the band is inspired by Fleetwood Mac and I have not been able to stop playing The Chain since.
There is also a TV adaptation of the novel on Amazon Prime. I started watching it but it’s sucked all the magic out of the book.
Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid is a unique and engaging novel that captivates readers from start to finish and the inspiration from Fleetwood Mac is a great touch that adds to the book's charm. This is a highly recommended read for anyone looking for an immersive and memorable story.
